摘要

Deep seawater (DSW), pumped from deeper than 200 m, has been used in our life and industries in Japan for twenty years. The author termed this trend as the Renaissance of seawater utilization culture. Seawater is the most abundant, recycling and mineral-rich water on the earth, among which DSW is additionally characterized by the four (or five) natures: coldness, cleanliness, abundant nutrient and little fluctuation (and ripeness). Production of marine bioresource is probably the only usage in which these characteristic natures are fully utilized. The coldness has developed the ecology and culture of cold current or deep water fish and shellfish as well as the stable production of shallow water species by mainly cooling in summer. Enriched nature (and ripeness) is useful in algal production. Clean nature not only reduces the disease but also keeps free from fouling in pipes and tanks. Stability of water quality simplifies the culture techniques and reduces the mass mortality. In spite of some endemic problems (e.g., cost of heating), application of DSW in marine bioresource production is particularly attractive and contribute to the development of local industry when well organized and combined with other activities (e.g., process of the products, sightseeing).
